Evidence, Sources & Provenance: what has to stay attached?

This matrix begins with the source, not with the conclusion. The rows are different evidence and source states: an original document, a secondary account, an official dataset, a living witness, a recovered archive, a mutable web source, something missing, a computational workflow or a posthumous archive.

Across the top are the things Keith repeatedly does to stop those sources becoming anonymous evidence: trace where they came from, keep ownership visible, check them, record their state, carry context forward, make them inspectable, revise after new evidence — and leave loss or uncertainty attached when it cannot honestly be repaired.

Boundary: provenance is not validity. Persistence is not quality. Reproducibility is not correctness. An official source can change. A living witness can be consequential without becoming final adjudication. An archive can exist without being complete. Making something public does not make it trustworthy, reusable or ethically available for every purpose.

The point of the grid is to make the route back to the source harder to lose.
