Curated navigational map — learning, agency and participation

Learning, Agency & Participation: how can support help without taking over?

This matrix starts with situations in which someone is trying to learn, participate, judge or act. The rows are different learning and participation settings. The columns show different ways agency can be enabled, scaffolded, shared, accompanied, maintained, revised or constrained.

Across Clyde Street, agency does not simply mean being left alone. Personal and professional learning repeatedly depend on other people, expertise, infrastructure, attention, spaces and maintenance. The harder question is what those supports make possible — and when the support system starts deciding too much.

Boundary: agency is not independence. Support is not neutral. Access is not participation; participation is not learning. A role label does not prove how the learner experienced it. Stewardship can enable agency and still concentrate labour or control. Expert direction can genuinely help. Blank cells mean only that this curated map has not selected a source for that crossing.

Hover or focus a heading for its meaning. Hover a source link for the exact-cell explanation; click or tap it to hold the source card open. Repeated references highlight so the same source can be followed sideways through genuinely different learning questions.
