What Should Make Something a Matrix?
A reader-facing explanation for Clyde Street
A Clyde Street matrix is a curated navigational map. It is not a census, a scoring system or a claim that the corpus can be reduced to a grid. We use one only when crossing two genuinely different ways of looking at the same territory helps a reader notice a relationship that either view on its own would hide.
WHAT IS IT?
A WHAT × HOW matrix asks two different questions at once. One axis usually asks what kind of thing, role, condition or problem is present. The other asks how Keith relates to it, handles it or responds to it. The exact questions change with the territory. The Technology matrix should not dictate the language or categories for People, Evidence, Learning or History.
The row and column labels are routes worth exploring, not a final taxonomy of Clyde Street.
WHY USE ONE?
A matrix makes relationships visible. It lets the same Clyde Street post provide more than one entrance and allows a reader to compare different kinds of response without pretending they form one fixed system. Its purpose is navigational: notice something, understand why a source sits in a particular intersection, then move sideways into a related article or down into the original Clyde Street post.
The aim is not to keep the reader inside the grid. It is to give the source back to the reader.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Each matrix uses a selected set of source posts rather than pretending to contain everything. A source chip can appear in more than one cell when the same post genuinely supports more than one route. Each placement therefore needs its own short “Why here?” explanation: why is this source in this particular cell, rather than simply somewhere in the topic?
Whose work is being encountered should also remain visible, especially when Keith is hosting, responding to or thinking with somebody else’s work. In an interactive matrix, hovering or tapping can preview the exact-cell explanation; opening the source card can then take the reader directly to the original Clyde Street post or onward to a related article.
Blank cells are intentional. They do not mean the subject is absent from Clyde Street; they mean we have not forced a source into that particular intersection. Places where a relationship is weak, unsupported or should remain separate are part of the map rather than defects to tidy away.
WHAT EARNS A MATRIX?
A subject earns a matrix when the two axes are genuinely different, their intersection adds meaning, and the sources support specific, source-faithful placements. Repeated appearances should create useful alternative entrances rather than duplication, and blank or difficult cells must remain possible.
The simplest test is the exact-cell question: can we explain why this source belongs here? If all we can say is “because it is about the topic”, the matrix is not earning its keep. If the same source appears twice, we should be able to explain two genuinely different entrances into it.
If the subject really wants a timeline, network, trail, geographical map or another form, we should use that instead. The point is not to make everything into a matrix.
WHAT A MATRIX IS NOT
A matrix is not an exhaustive classification of Clyde Street. It does not measure prevalence, prove importance, create a developmental sequence, transfer somebody else’s ideas to Keith, or turn a reader-facing navigation device into a new research finding. It is a later way through the preserved corpus, and it should remain corrigible as navigation without rewriting the underlying evidence.
A good matrix helps the reader notice a relationship, understand why a source is there — and then leave the matrix to see the source for themselves.
Following RT → TR → Keith-fidelity convergence and DC approval, this reader-facing explanation is approved as the current explanatory standard for Clyde Street curated navigational matrices. It governs communication of what a matrix is, why one is used, how it works, what earns matrix form, and the boundary that another geometry should be used when the terrain warrants it. This approval does not freeze the analytical axes or categories of future matrices.
