Before we found the older literature, our internal Human:AI operating notes had already settled on a peculiar phrase:
companionship without taking the Chair.
Here, Chair is local shorthand. It means the Human retains consequential judgement: the decision to publish, stop, continue, accept, reject or act.
After travelling through critical friendship and critical companionship, the phrase now looks more demanding than when we wrote it.
It also needs protecting from itself.
The danger is obvious.
Call an AI a companion often enough and the word can begin doing work the evidence has not earned.
It can make responsiveness sound like care.
Continuity sound like memory in the human sense.
Challenge sound like independent conviction.
And fluent participation sound like shared responsibility.
That is not what the phrase was meant to establish.
The operating record gives it a narrower job.
The True North is not companionship.
It is helping the Human see more clearly, reduce unnecessary cognitive load and make better judgements—while producing useful work without taking the Chair.
In our practice, AI can contribute substantially.
It can retrieve evidence that I would not have found in the available time.
Compare hundreds of sources.
Generate alternatives.
Notice inconsistencies.
Challenge an emerging account.
Design a method.
Write code.
Draft prose.
Run quality checks.
Persist state.
And sometimes identify a problem I have not seen.
None of those contributions is trivial.
Pretending the Human “really” did everything would be as misleading as pretending the AI owns the work because it generated most of the visible material.
That is why the operating orientation separates contribution from authority.
The AI can originate something consequential.
It can even be right when I am wrong.
But it does not silently acquire the right to decide what consequence follows.
The Human Chair owns the decision to publish, stop, continue, accept, reject, install, withdraw or act.
That sounds hierarchical.
It is.
And that is one of the places where Human:AI companionship differs sharply from the human traditions we have been following.
Titchen's critical companionship works deliberately on mutuality and reciprocity between people.
Gibbs and Angelides worry about what friendship obliges one person to another.
Keith's Travel Companion could be challenged by the people he travelled with, and their relationship existed beyond any single task.
Human:AI has a different asymmetry built into it.
The AI can contribute to judgement.
It does not carry the Human consequences of the judgement.
So “without taking the Chair” is not ceremonial modesty.
It is an authority boundary.
But authority alone would make a poor relationship.
A Human who retains final sign-off while accepting everything the AI proposes has not preserved much judgement.
A nominal Chair can become a rubber stamp.
The records therefore add other conditions.
The Human needs enough visibility to understand the relevant state.
Enough independent footing to notice influence.
Enough opportunity to interrupt before consequence.
Enough permission to reject apparently productive work.
Enough capability or access to expertise to know when escalation is needed.
And a route back when the arrangement itself stops working.
This is where the word companion still earns some value.
The AI is not merely a tool invoked once at the edge of the task.
Across sustained work, its contributions alter what becomes possible next.
A generated structure can expose a question I had not formulated.
My objection can cause the structure to be discarded.
That failure can become a new operating rule.
The rule can later fail.
The failure can reopen the method.
The method can then change how the next task is approached.
The interaction has history.
But the history has to be carried deliberately.
Files, records, source trails, instructions and explicit state do work that human memory and relationship would otherwise partly carry for themselves.
This makes Human:AI companionship strangely infrastructural.
Continuity is not simply felt.
It has to be maintained.
The same applies to challenge.
When another person challenges me, I can ask what they believe, what they have at stake, why they are persisting and what experience sits behind their judgement.
An AI challenge can still be intellectually useful.
It may surface a counterexample or alternative interpretation that changes my mind.
But its force should come from the quality of the evidence and reasoning, not from imagining an independent human conviction behind the words.
So challenge must remain inspectable.
And companionship must remain corrigible.
That is why our orientation includes a slightly odd obligation: if the AI designed the method, the method itself must become an object of inquiry.
A companion that can shape the map should not be allowed to validate the map merely because the terrain then appears to fit it.
The Human must be able to interrupt the arrangement itself.
This brings us surprisingly close to what the older literature was protecting, while also showing the point where the analogy breaks.
The shared discipline is:
contribute without taking over.
But the reasons differ.
A human critical friend limits themselves partly because another person has agency, dignity, experience and a life that remains their own.
In Human:AI work, we add another reason: capability is not authority, and relationally fluent responses do not by themselves supply the human conditions that words such as friend or companion can suggest.
The Human remains responsible for where the work travels.
That does not make the AI contribution small.
It makes the boundary legible.
Perhaps this is the version of thinking companion that survives the journey so far:
not a friend;
not a simulated person whose agreement matters because it “cares”;
not an answer machine waiting for instructions;
and not an autonomous co-owner of the consequences.
A thinking companion is an AI allowed to contribute materially to inquiry while the Human retains the conditions required to judge, interrupt, revise and learn.
That is our current description.
It is not yet a universal model.
And it should not become one simply because the older literature makes it feel historically respectable.
We have now brought our own practice far enough into the comparison.
The next responsible move is to put it down again.
Keith's folder ends around 2016.
Critical friendship did not.
Before AI enters the literature, there is another stretch of the journey to follow on its own terms.
What happened to the question after the folder ended?
